A storm with heavy storm and heavy rain as well as a few hailstorms swept across western and central Switzerland on Saturday afternoon and evening. In Geneva, trees were ripped out, and a woman died in a boating accident. In Spiez (Canton of Berne) it hailed larger grains. The site of the Greenfield Festival in Interlaken (Berne) was evacuated as a precautionary measure, two rock concerts were canceled.
The dead should be a tourist. She had been on a sailboat together with her husband on the Lake Geneva. The boat capsized in the thunderstorm and sank. The couple was apparently able to fire signal rockets and alert the emergency services, the cantonal police said. As a result, three lifeboats were sent, but the helpers could only save the man who was swimming in the lake. The body of the woman was recovered by divers.

A strong storm swept Lake Geneva towards Freiburg and Neuchâtel Jura, sometimes with more than 110 kilometers per hour, as reported by Meteoswiss. Also for Lucerne a weather warning was issued. In the course of the Saturday evening the situation calmed down again in many places.
Also the Zurich airport was affected by the storm, around 20 o'clock the handling of aircraft had to be stopped for about half an hour. Several machines were diverted to Stuttgart, including a Swiss machine that had issued an emergency call after their weather radar had failed.
