The CW has added three of its pilots to the series.
"Batwoman", "Katy Keene" and "Nancy Drew" were all ordered for the 2019-2020 season. In addition, one person with knowledge of the situation said that "Jane the Novela", a spin-off of the CW series "Jane the Virgin", is not progressing at the station. The pilot of the series adaptation of "The Lost Boys" is shot down again. "Glamorous" about a non-gender compliant high school student may still be controversial.
"Batwoman" is based on the eponymous DC Comics character. Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) is gearing herself into the streets of Gotham with a passion for social justice and a flair for talking her mind, as Batwoman, a decidedly lesbian and well-trained street fighter who can bomb the city's criminal revival. "Katy Keene", a spinoff from "Riverdale", also based on the Archie Comics character, follows up-and-coming fashion designer Katy Keene (Lucy Hale), who meets Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) off the bus chasing her musical dreams. Her world is filled with haunted artists starving, including the mysterious celebrities Pepper Smith (Julia Chan) and Broadway-bound performer Jorge Lopez, and drag queen Ego Ginger (Jonny Beauchamp).
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa – Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics – and Michael Grassi will write and produce the product "Katy Keene". Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater – CEO and publisher of Archie Comics – will produce the executive product. Maggie Kiley led the pilot and will serve as executive producer. Berlanti Productions will produce in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.
As reported by Variety both "Batwoman" and "Katy Keene" were early adopted as serial castles, especially since both are from Berlanti Productions. Berlanti currently has seven shows at The CW, with these two pickups being nine.
"Nancy Drew" is set in the summer after graduation from Nancy (Kennedy McMann). She thought she was leaving her hometown for college, but when a family tragedy holds her back for another year, she finds herself in a ghostly murder investigation, discovering secrets deeper than she had ever imagined. Noga Landau, Melinda Hsu Taylor, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are authors and executive producers of "Nancy Drew". Lis Rowinski will take over the executive production. Larry Teng led the pilot and will produce as a co-executive. CBS Television Studios will produce in collaboration with Fake Empire.
Previously, CW had renewed its entire scripted cast including all five of its freshman shows.
