Bayern Munich against Union Berlin: Bundesliga leaders do the business in return

Bayern Munich played its first Bundesliga game in more than two months on Sunday and won 2-0 against Union Berlin in the German capital. It was anything but a convincing performance by the Bavarian giants, but they did the job with Robert Lewandowski in the first half and Benjamin Pavard in the 80th minute.

The result is well timed since the club still has eight games to go. Second-placed Dortmund was a one-sided winner over Schalke on Saturday, as the Bundesliga was the first major European league to return after the interruption of the coronavirus pandemic. With Bayern’s victory on Sunday, the club is four points ahead of Dortmund.

Here are three insights from Bayern’s victory over Union Berlin’s 12th place:

Dead ball specialists

Bayern dominated possession of the ball, but the team wasn’t as keen when it came to creating golden opportunities and putting them in the frame. Bayern had only four shots on goal – the lowest mark for the club since a 0-0 draw against RB Leipzig on February 9.

To compensate for this, the Bayern players had to find another way to break through. You did it over dead ball situations. Lewandowski’s start came 40 minutes after a penalty:

And Pavard’s goal in the 80th minute was a good header from Joshua Kimmich after a corner:

It wasn’t particularly pretty in the end, but the club did the job.

The Bavarians had rusted as expected

As you can imagine, the game was a bit sloppy for most teams that haven’t played in two months, but hardly a cause for concern for Bayern Munich. Serge Gnabry had some decent moments, Alphonso Davies was sharp left and a win is a win. What would have been more worrying than being sloppy in the attack would be behind, but Bayern did well by taking only two shots on the frame and keeping Union offside.

Still the favorites

It looks like a two-horse race in the table with a big week ahead of us – and a four-point lead for Bayern is still pretty big. Bayern meet Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, while Dortmund goes to Wolfsburg on the same day. If Bayern slips, it would make the head-to-head match even more important. Bayern go to Dortmund on May 26 in the biggest game of the season.
