Tunisia's first freely elected President Beji Caid Essebsi died under the presidency of the country at the age of 92.
He was the oldest sitting president in the world. He was hospitalized Wednesday but officials did not state why he was being treated.

At the beginning of the year he announced that he would not stand in the elections to be expected in November.
Mr. Essebsi was also hospitalized last month after suffering from a "severe health crisis".
They gave no further details. Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, who visited him at the hospital, urged people not to spread "false news" about his condition.

Since then, Tunisia has been praised as the only democracy that emerged from the revolutions of the so-called Arab Spring.
