It was a bad night for Ben Askren at UFC 239 in Las Vegas.
Not only did he lose to Jorge Masvidal by forcefully cracking his knee, but it also happened in the first five seconds when they gave Masvidal the new record for the fastest knockout in UFC history. It was also scary (look here). Askren fell hard and stiff from the shot and did not get up for several minutes. He was pushed out of the arena for testing, but preliminary research was positive.
"He's good," said UFC President Dana White after the event. "All his things have come back negative. So he is fine. I'm sure he's not feeling well, but you know … "
Askren was not present for the post-fight press conference, but he later went into social media to share his thoughts. What is happens. As usual, it was about his normal amount of reserved dry humor.
It did not take until Jorge Masvidal responded, mocking Askren's message and announcing a shot labeled "Gamebred" attacking the downcast Askren again.
The defeat to Masvidal was the first in Askren's MMA career and brought him to the 19-1-1. Masvidal improves to 34-13 and with two murders in a row Darren Till and Ben Askren find it hard to imagine that he has much more to do to win a welterweight title. Although you're almost wondering if he'd like to accept a rematch against Askren when he's asked for it, because he enjoyed it so much to slap the guy in the face.
