The Galaxy S10e
Mack Hogan | CNBC
You do not have to spend more than $ 1,000 on a new phone. You can, if you only own have the latest and greatest, but there are many good phones that cost a lot less. Phone manufacturers know that.
Google has recently begun selling its Pixel 3a and 3a XL, Apple is selling the iPhone XR and older iPhones, and Samsung has a family of A-Series phones that are cheaper than some of its flagships ,
I tested a few of them and here are some of my favorite phones that cost under $ 1
OnePlus 7 Pro (669 USD): Flagship Features Without the Crazy Price
The OnePlus 7 Pro
Todd Haselton | CNBC
The OnePlus 7 Pro features the same Snapdragon 855 processor as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, plenty of high-speed memory, and a stunning (and fast!) Display. This hardware makes the OnePlus 7 Pro one of the smoothest smartphones on the market.
You also get a true edge-to-edge display. To unlock, use a fingerprint sensor located under the touchscreen. There is no notch or punch for the front-facing camera. Instead, a small electric motor opens the camera when needed and hides it inside when not in use.
However, they give up some things. Although OnePlus proves that the 7 Pro can absorb some dunks, there is no independently verified water resistance rating. Wireless charging is also not available, although the 7 Pro supports super fast fast charging.
Samsung Galaxy S10e ($ 499-749): Great value for money from Samsung
The Samsung Galaxy S10e
Todd Haselton | CNBC
If you are looking for a flagship of a well-known brand at a special price, the Samsung Galaxy S10e is the best choice. Now that it has been unavailable for several months, it is often discounted from its suggested retail price of $ 749.99. Unlike many other iPhone offerings, however, you do not have to add a new line or buy multiple phones to get a good price. Walmart, for example, is currently selling the S10e for $ 499 if you want to buy the pink or white model, or $ 599 if you want to buy the blue or black model.
Notch Screen and great cameras. Plus, you get full IP68 water resistance and wireless charging. Sure, you may not get a fingerprint reader on the display, it's on the side of the phone instead, but the S10e will have all the features you'd expect from a flagship phone in 2019.
iPhone 8 ($ 599): If you need an iPhone
The iPhone 8
Nina Raja | CNBC
For some people, an iPhone is not negotiable. Whether your friends are loyal to Blue Bubble, or tied to an Apple Watch, iPhones are sometimes the only option. In this case, I recommend the iPhone 8.
It still has water resistance, wireless charging, a very fast processor and a good camera. The biggest disappointment is the display, which looks outdated with its large bezels and smaller size. Apple has also supported older phones with software updates in the past.
Just know that new iPhones will hit the market in the coming weeks. In this case, prices for the old models fall. So maybe wait for a price drop.
Google Pixel 3a / 3a XL ($ 399 / $ 479): For Those on a Budget
Google Pixel 3a XL
Todd Haselton | CNBC
The Google Pixel 3a XL has consistently better photos than the iPhone XS, but costs less than $ 500. Even the OnePlus 7 Pro triple camera can not beat the pixels in difficult lighting conditions. With a great portrait mode and an unbeatable "night vision" feature for dark scenes, the Pixel 3a is just as capable as its more expensive brother, the Pixel 3.
Google had to cut costs elsewhere. The pixel 3a is delivered with a much slower midrange than the normal pixel. Opening apps is noticeably slower, processing photos takes a while, and graphics-intensive games feel more restless. And although the screen still has good colors and good brightness, the phone looks noticeably cheaper thanks to the large bezels.
As with the OnePlus 7 Pro, there is no official water resistance here, and the Pixel 3a can not be charged wirelessly. If you prefer the clean software and the amazing camera of the normal pixel, the Pixel 3 is the cheapest way to get it.
Samsung Galaxy A50 ($ 350): Outstanding Performance Features
End features for its $ 350 price. It has a large, vibrant edge-to-edge display that you expect from a Samsung phone. It offers a built-in fingerprint reader for unlocking and two cameras as well as a depth sensor for portraits.
It also has a microSD card slot for extra storage and a headphone jack that many flagship phones no longer offer, including the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10. Finally, a huge battery provides enough juice for the whole day.
Not surprisingly, the A50 lacks wireless charging or water resistance. Like the Pixel, it also has a lower-level processor that does not move through daily use like a flagship phone. It feels slower than the Pixel 3a and noticeably slower than the top phones, but that's to be expected.
