None of them has shown that they are effective against other types of energy-restricted (calorie-restricted) diets, the researchers said. "There is still no miracle diet, nutrition, or bioactive component that targets belly fat," said Kari D. Pilolla of California Polytechnic State University.

But a heart-healthy diet that is high in fiber and low in saturated fat is a great way to prevent and reduce abdominal obesity, Pilolla said in the publication in Health and Health Fitness magazine. Diets that contain very little trans and saturated fats and higher fiber intake seem to be helpful in reducing or preventing abdominal obesity.
"These recommendations are consistent with heart-healthy diets such as the NIH diet high blood pressure (DASH) diet and the Mediterranean diet developed by the US," said Pilolla.
She said that regardless of body weight, greater waist circumference increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. These risks mainly relate to visceral adipose tissue ̵
Pilolla also recommends health and fitness professionals assess and monitor abdominal obesity among their clients and assess their cardiometabolic effects.
