Chapman, the star of "Dog the Bounty Hunter", was recently brought into a medically induced coma while battling cancer. She died on Wednesday in a hospital in Honolulu at the age of 51 years.
Their worship service in Waikiki began with a prayer, then family and friends paddled out of Fort DeRussy Beach, throwing flowers into their memory in the ocean, CNN affiliate KHNL reported. They were asked to use only inappropriate flowers and no lei whose filaments could damage life in the sea.
Together with her husband, Duane "Dog" Chapman, the couple had homes in Hawaii and Colorado from 2004 to 2012.
"(The Monument) was certainly beautiful and overwhelming" said Misti Manasas, a friend of the Chapmans family, the partner. "Hawaii is definitely her heart and I'm really thankful that we can be part of it and be here to support the family."
A second memorial is planned for Colorado.
