The first trailer for the upcoming Hellboy The reboot came off today, giving us the first, more fiery look at director Neil Marshall's darker, keener vision for the popular superhero "Dark Horse Comics".
Writer / artist Mike Mignola's Hellboy comics have already been implemented in two feature films – Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) – both with Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro at the helm. Why do we get a reboot? Del Toro had planned to do a third installment, but preferred his own script to that of Andrew Cosby and left the project. Without the director, Perlman did not want to make another sequel. The film re-started, and David Harbor ( Stranger Things ) took the lead role.
Hellboy is a half-demon from hell, called a baby by Nazi occultists and called to earth by a human surrogate father, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm. He is the head of the US Office for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.), in case you have forgotten. The adult Hellboy is basically a big red devil with cleaved hooves, a tail, dropped horns and the right hand of fate (stone). This makes it a significant advantage for the B.P.R.D. The first Hellboy movie was an origin story as we follow the character from his first days on earth as a toddler to his fate as the Bringer of the Apocalypse.
For the restart, Hellboy is already fully grown and worked alongside Bruttenholm (Ian McShane, American Gods ) at the BPRD. He dutifully takes on the forces of evil like a good soldier, even though the people he belongs to trying to help, sometimes less than collegial. "I thought we should fight monsters, not work with them," complains Major Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae Kim, Lost ).
Given the prominence of Milla Jovovich ( The Fifth Element ) as the ancient sorceress Nimue (aka Blood Queen), the film seems to pick up some classic tales from the comics (especially "Darkness Calls "," The Wild Hunt "and" The Storm and the Fury "). And it looks like Hellboy will someday regain his power as Anung un Rama ("and a flame crown set on his forehead") with horns and flaming crown.
Scriptwriter Crosby [ Eureka ) said he wanted his Hellboy to be darker and more cruel than the earlier films – hence the rating of the reboot. "Neil [Mitchell] said from the beginning that he wanted to go through a razor-sharp blade between horror and comic film that is music for me, because I worked on it in the script and exactly what Mignola does so well." the Comics, "he said in 2016 to We Got This Covered.
We'll certainly get a taste of it in the trailer – there's plenty of action, hellfire and bloody warfare, as well as Hellboy's trademark." Harbor is a wonderful actor, with great delivery, and he sees every inch of the role, but Perlman's iconic depiction is a tough act to follow in. The biggest problem is that the original Hellboy fans really wanted a third film to capture Del Toro's signature vision and legacy They do not get it, and this trailer may not be enough to win them over.
Hellboy comes to the theaters on April 19, 2019.
