It was the year of "Despacito" and the year of urban music.

The most-played song of the year 2017 swept the Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2018 and won six trophies: Hot Latin Song of the Year; hot Latin song of the year, vocal event; Airplay song of the year; digital song of the year; Streaming song of the year; and the Latin pop song of the year.

The celebration of "Despacito," a song that rekindled global interest in Latin American music, was a fitting way to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Billboard Latin Music Awards on the Telemundo Network. The awards ceremony takes place Thursday night at Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas (the first time in Sin City).

While "Despacito" was not performed on Thursday night (the song had its live debut at the Billboard Latin Music 201

7) Awards), its impact was far-reaching. The producers Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo became the producers of the year for the song, and Daddy Yankee – one of the track's co-authors (and featured artists) – was the big winner of the evening with eight awards. In addition to his "Despacito" victories, Yankee won the Latin Rhythmist Artist of the Year, Solo and Songwriter of the Year for "Despacito" as well as several other songs that reached Billboard 's Hot Latin Songs Chart, including "Hula Hoop" and "La Rompe Corazones" with Ozuna.

He was followed by Luis Fonsi and Justin Bieber, both of whom could take home seven prizes each. In addition to his "Despacito" trophies, Bieber became the crossover artist of the year, while Fonsi, as the lead actor on "Despacito" and the subsequent "Echame la Culpa", won the "Hot Latin Songs" award of the year.

But it was not just the year of "Despacito": there was an explosion of Latin tracks that became global this year, and Latin artists who could reach fans like never before, mostly with urban or urban music. The performances of the mostly big-city superstars included premieres by Ozuna ("La Modelo" with Cardi B), Bad Bunny ("Amorfoda"), Maluma ("El Prestamo") and Nicky Jam and J Balvin, the "X" for the first time on TV.

The coveted award for Artist of the Year, which includes sales, airplay and streaming, went to Ozuna, who thanks to a series of singles and his debut album Odisea .

Even pop winners had an urban coloring. After the "Despacito", Superstar Shakira was the biggest winner of the night, with five awards including Latin Pop Artist of the Year, Solo and Top Latin Album Artist of the Year, Female. But she also won Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, female for hits that included the decidedly urban "Chantaje" with Maluma.

Maluma, in turn, a 10-time candidate (in four categories for "Chantaje") (19659005) The regional Mexican music, long the driving force of Latin American music in this country, was replaced by most of the major categories by the sheer power of the big city Excluded hits. However, regional Mexican acts still dominated the new category of Artist of the Year, with Christian Nodal winning the award. Nodal also won regional Mexican artist of the year, solo and regional Mexican song of the year. Romeo Santos, who won the title of "Top Latin Album" of the year, was also male. tropical album of the year; and Tropical Artist of the Year, Solo.

This year's Special Lifetime Award went to Mexican rock band Maná, who has been honored for her career as one of the most iconic and sustainable bands in Latin American music as well as for her philanthropic endeavors, notably through her Selva Negra Environmental Foundation. The group played two of their biggest hits: En el muelle de San Blas and Corazon Espinado.

In the categories of the labels, Sony Music Latin was the big winner of the evening and took home 16 of their 20 nominations, including Hot Latin Songs of the Year and Top Latin Albums Label of the Year. Universal Music Latin Entertainment won three of their ten nominations, including the label's Hot Latin Songs of the Year. Sony ATV was both publisher of the year (Sony / ATV Latin Music Publishing) and the Publishing Company of the Year (Sony / ATV Music).
