There was a time when few artists were willing or able to cross the line between country and R & B music. And when they tried, the backlash was fast and hard – as the Twitter outrage over Beyoncé's performance with the Dixie Chicks at the 2016 CMA Awards shows.
But all that changed this year with Lil Nas X's country rap smash "Old Town Road. "And when Lil Nas X performed that song at the BET Awards on Sunday with Billy Ray Cyrus, Cyrus was actually greeted by the BET audiences – proof that the times are actually changing.
Although Lil Nas X and Cyrus & # 39; "Old Town Road" were not nominated at the BET Awards this Sunday. One or the other pair stole the show with its historic country and western revue. Nas rocked a pair of yellow leather chaps and a fringed vest, and Cyrus, jokingly introduced as a graduate of Howard University by hostess Regina Hall, stepped onto the saloon-themed stage on horseback and then joined with the support of a Daisy Duke troupe. # 39; d line up – dancers, while the crowd at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles (including Cardi B and Rihanna) caused a stir.
The appearance of the singer of "Achy Breaky Heart" has pretty much ruined Twitter, and the online response has been surprisingly positive for the most part. For those who nas & # 39; interesting journey to the top of the country charts – and Cyrus & # 39; Journey to the BETs – do not know, here's an introduction: Already in March, "Old Town Road" landed simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Song, and Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs Charts , Billboard removed it (and controversially) from the hot-country list because it did not contain enough "country elements" to qualify, but members of the country music community soon gathered behind Nas – including Cyrus, who then appeared on the remix of the song and in his all-star music video. The remix finally landed at No. 1 of the Hot 100 and stayed there for 11 weeks. it has also made the Hot Country Songs, the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs, the Rhythmic Songs, the and the Dance / Mix Show Airplay Charts a star.
And it seems that an unlikely BET network made it a star of Billy Ray Cyrus. The entertaining fact that "Old Town Road" features an example of "34 Ghosts IV" by Nine Inch Nails makes it a genre-overpowering phenomenon – though Trent Reznor has unfortunately starved out this year's BETs.
