"Blood Moon" meets star trails in stunning long exposure photos



A star-tracking sequence of 390 images shows the path of the moon and the stars during the total lunar eclipse on January 21

A star tracking sequence consisting of 390 images shows the way of the moon during the Super Blood Wolf Moon on January 21, 2019 from the Mina de São Domingos in the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve in Mértola, Portugal.

In a lunar eclipse, the full moon moves through the Earth's shadow, giving the natural satellite a blood-red hue. The shadow is not so noticeable in this photo due to the long exposure technique that over-exposed the bright moontail. [Amazing Photos of the Super Blood Wolf Moon of 2019!]

Because the Moon was in its elliptical orbit near Earth at the time of the eclipse, it was also called the "Supermoon". Some stars are reflected in a small puddle of acidic water in the old mine.

To create this image, I used a Canon 5D Mark II DSLR camera to record a 13-second exposure for each of the 390 images with the image ISO set to 1600. I used a 24mm lens set at f / 2.
