At least 13 people, mostly youth, were killed and 50 others injured when a bomb blasted a high school in Crimea on Wednesday, the Russian Investigative Committee said.

The Russian National Guard described the explosion as an act of terrorism while the Investigative Committee launched a terrorism investigation.

"The majority of them are teenagers," the committee said in a statement, adding that the metallic device was

eyewitnesses to the school, who were visited by children ages 1

4 to 18, said that gunmen fired into the air before the explosion, Russian media reported.

"There are many injured people, we started to evacuate people through the windows, people are in a panic," the Russian telegram news service Mash quotes an unnamed student.

The attack took place in Kerch, a city in eastern Crimea, a peninsula Russia annexed four years ago. In Kerch, a new bridge financed by the Kremlin connects the Crimea with Russia.

The explosion is the first English: A fatal attack on Russian territory since a suicide attack in April last year on the subway of St. Petersburg. No group took responsibility for this attack, but Russian security forces said it was the work of an Islamist radical.
