Borussia Dortmund against Schalke 04: Haaland, Brandt, Guerreiro shine in Revierderby when the Bundesliga returns

The district derby on Saturday was all Borussia Dortmund when the hosts defeated rival Schalke 4-0 to mark the return of the Bundesliga after a two-month break. Dortmund played in the Signal Iduna Park without fans due to the coronavirus pandemic and used sensational performances by its top three and Raphael Guerreiro to move within one point of Bayern Munich (Leaderboard). Schalke, with the American Weston McKennie in the middle, could not contain his rival, who scored twice in each half. The American Gio Reyna should start earlier for Dortmund catch an injury when warming up.

Here are three takeaways from the game:

Clinical and sharp

Borussia Dortmund was as efficient as possible and scored with four shots to set the tone and bury a helpless Schalke team. The pass was quick, crisp, and perfectly matched, and when they were ready to jump forward, Erling Haaland already challenged the ball and stepped on the back line with one step.

They mixed in a bit of flair, put their passports exactly where they needed to be, and made it look easy.

The first goal that came from Haaland, followed a delicious note from Julian Brandt to Thorgan Hazard, who then built Haaland perfectly.

The second goal was again a perfect pass from Brandt, who put Guerreiro up with this beautiful performance:

Hazard then made it 3-0 at the beginning of the second half before Haaland filtered out a pass to Guerreiro after the goal of the game, who did this:

7; defense was absent

It won’t be a game Weston McKennie and his company will remember, but it was hardly his fault. He had a few moments both on and off the ball, but sometimes he sat deep in transition or had to chase back with just two helping defenders. It got worse when Schalke tried to get back into the game and the visitors had no chance to get back into the game.

Dortmund won 2-0 and Haaland brought a ball forward. If the ball goes to Brandt in space, just look at where Schalke’s defense is.

As bad as it gets.

Schalke in trouble when it comes to the Europa League?

Schalke started the day in a Europa League and will finish the day outside the top 6. It didn’t take long for them to come out of the top half of the table. This result extended Schalke’s winning streak to eight games. They have just scored two goals in these eight games. The lack of creativity in the attack has meant that they were excluded in every game in which they scored one or two goals. What is the hope of a team that has conceded 13 goals in the last four goals and cannot defend or score? A promising start to the season has started hissing after a game since the return from the break.
