The spacecraft for NASA's next Mars mission – Mars 2020 – is taking shape. Here's the complete cruise stage in a clean room at JPL. It will propel and guide the spaceship on its 7-month journey to Mars.
Here is a photo of the Mars 2020 Spacecraft of May 9, 2019, now taking shape at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. At the end of April, the engineers installed a controller that moved and steered the spacecraft. This picture shows the complete cruise state driving and directing the ship on its seven-month voyage to Mars. The mission will be launched in July 2020 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. It will land on 18 February 2021 in Jezero Crater on Mars. The NASA described this scene as follows:
and hung on ropes, is the complete cruise phase … Directly below is the Aeroshell (white back shell and barely visible black heat shield), which the vehicle during the cruise and during the fiery descent into protects the Martian atmosphere. Not visible (because it is co-ordinated in the Aeroshell) is the finished rocket-powered sinking stage and the replacement rover (a replacement for the real rover, which is final assembled in the clean room High Bay 1 of JPL).
Mars The space ship of 2020 was tested in the 8 x 26 meter chamber in the same configuration it will be in while flying through the interplanetary space. The 2020 Rover features a completely new suite of instruments, including a sample caching system that collects Mars samples to return to Earth on later missions.
