MIAMI BEACH, Florida – Sonya Bain faced a daunting challenge about 12 years ago. Researchers believe that one in eight women in their lives will develop breast cancer. To find out she was among them was scary.
About 330,000 women and 2,550 men in the US will be diagnosed this year. African American women are more likely to die from the disease.
Bain said she is a grateful survivor who deals with the side effects of her "dark days" of treatment with the help of a support group. She said despite the fighting, she also felt blessed.
This year, approximately 40,920 women in the US die of the disease.
The annual Ladies Spa Day at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami Beach on Tuesday was a chance for the happy breast cancer survivors to spread hope.
Bain knows how difficult it is to deal with the side effects of chemo, radiotherapy and surgery. She said that the "fabulous" event was an opportunity to show the patient "how great it will be" when they complete the treatment.

Researchers say that survivors who try to manage their stress with risky behaviors such as smoking or alcohol use, or who become more sedentary, may experience a poorer quality of life after cancer treatment. Bain has made the event her new lifestyle.
"I've been coming here for 10 years," Bain said. "It's getting better and better every year."
During the 13th Spa Day celebration, there was a breakfast, yoga classes, music therapy, hair styling, henna tattoos and full body massages. This year there were additional services. Gail Brown, an oncology social worker at the center, said the event's goal is to help patients cope.
"Originally, we called it Women's Day, but as the event grew, it evolved into that," said Brown.
Dozens of women enjoyed the services on Tuesday. Newly diagnosed patients mingled with survivors who noticed this year that there was also nutritional support, meditation, aromatherapy and art therapy.
Bain, who also likes talking to women about the importance of mammography screening and physical examinations, said she enjoyed celebrating among old and new friends. The other benefits included shaping your eyebrows professionally and enjoying a massage.
