For the next few minutes, he ran a list of all who had been on his side for the last year and a half. The speech, a rare moment in the limelight of a judiciary that has tried to keep away from the public since its rise to the nation's highest court, revealed that its confirmation – and the allegations of sexual misconduct that shook the nation – still persists currently are a painful memory.
"There is a saying that adversity leads a man in and also reveals your true friends," he said.
As he spoke, a handful of demonstrators sitting at tables in the room whistled high pipes – and were escorted. After they left the room, applause broke out again.
Kavanaugh said he was "humbled" to be there, and he selected the former White House lawyer, Don McGahn, along with his counterparts Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch, who were all present attending and the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who introduced him. He also named each of the other judges by their name and called justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg an "inspiration."
Kavanaugh brought the man who nominated him, President Donald Trump, probably because he had the president's personal lawyers earlier in the day, did not petition the court.
At a point when his voice broke, Kavanaugh thanked his family and thought about the prayers his daughter had said at the time of his confirmation process. He paused for a moment to calm himself down and then joked, "Matt Damon would have made it" ̵
Later, Kavanaugh said that he and his family were "grateful for all their prayers."
The speech also had light moments. He said that since his arrival in the "Shakespeare Analysis", Justice had noted a "significant increase" in sports talks and a "significant decline" during the judges' regularly scheduled lunches.
As the largest judge of the cafeteria committee, he brought pizza to court.
"My legacy is certain," he said, laughing.
At the end of the speech, Kavanaugh said he was "optimistic about the future of America and our independent judiciary." The gala, just over a year after the allegation of sexual misconduct almost derailed Kavanaugh's affirmation, was in stark contrast to that low publicity he had since taking office at the Supreme Court. His time on the bench began with a private initiation, kept away from protesters who flooded the ranks of the Supreme Court and knocked on the monumental bronze doors as he took his oath. Kavanaugh has relentlessly denied the allegations.
However, attendees had to drop by on Thursday evening at a large electronic billboard re-enacting the congressional testimony of Christine Blasey Ford, who publicly accused Kavanaugh of attacking her decades ago at a high school party. The demonstration was the work of Demand Justice, a liberal group that spoke out against Trump's candidate.
For the crowd of conservatives, Kavanaugh – along with his counterpart Gorsuch – is a resounding success after the Conservatives spent years in the trenches of the judiciary They work to attract the attention of the courts and review potential candidates, to change the face of the judiciary. The Republicans have enforced more than 150 judges since Trump took office.
"Our progress is literally historic," said the Kentucky Republican. "My motto for the remainder of the year and next year is & # 39; leave no vacancy."
Kavanaugh has an extraordinary first term for a junior justice. He was given two relatively fleshy majority opinions, which most junior judges see only when they spend more time on the bench. The opinion is granted by the Chief Justice or the highest Judge by a majority.
Kavanaugh cautiously went before his first months – including the vote with Roberts, for example, to reject a case regarding planned parenting because of the objections of the more conservative Justice Clarence Thomas.
It is unclear whether he will allow the Trump administration to phase out the program.
Although he often appeared as a judge at a lower court in the speech circle and as a guest lecturer, the Federalist Society's event was his first major outing. He had agreed to hold the speech before the Federalist Society a year ago, and has no similar events in his calendar.
