Bryan Cogman spent the last ten years of his life in the fictitious world of Westeros, first as an assistant to the Game of Thrones Showrunner and then quickly becoming a collaborator Writer and producer on the show. (He wrote the latest episode, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," one of our favorite episodes of the series.)
With Game of Thrones this season ended HBO has prequel and spin-off ideas with the A song of ice and fire designed by the author George RR Martin and several other authors. Only one of them was approved at the time, and in a recent interview Cogman confirms that the spin-off of Game of Thrones [1
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cogman was asked if it feels like goodbye to Westeros when Game of Thrones approaches his serial finale, and he stated that he finished with this world:
"I'm definitely going. I have developed a follow-up show with George. George has collaborated with a number of writers, including Jane [ Goldman ] whose show [as a pilot] is performed. My prequel show will not take place and will not happen. HBO chose a different route. I am now working with Amazon and helping them with their shows. So it's a farewell. I'm done with Westeros. It's wonderful bittersweet. Previously, Martin had hinted that Cogman's planned show (on which the two worked together) would be an adaptation "during a very exciting time in Westerosi history," which leads us to suspect The Stories of Dunk and Egg.
, a wandering hedge knight and a young squire who turns out to be Targaryen's royal house. Whatever it was, they could not get it to work.
Cogman's farewell is sad news for the man who wrote the series for Game of Thrones and was known as the unofficial guardian of the lore (until writer Dave Hill joined the team later in the show) , He was able to translate Martin's writings into some of the series' best episodes, and he showed a remarkable understanding of the necessary balance between breathtaking bombast and character-based intimacy. His voice will be missed in this fantasy world.
Although Cogman recognizes everything for the legacy of the show, it's also exciting that a new group of people are coming to tell stories played in Westeros. Jane Goldman ( Kick-Ass ) is leading the indictment with a new show that took place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones hopefully bringing fresh blood to a wholly new conclusion will lead Vibe – almost as we could have gotten from Guillermo del Toro's version of The Hobbit before Peter Jackson finally got back on board.
