Burger Kingsdebuts on Monday at more than 100 stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. Previously, people who wanted to eat the fast-food version of the chain's vegetable flame burger had to travel to Miami, Columbus or Montgomery.
The Impossible Whopper is made by Impossible Foods for its. Founded in 2011, the company first used a blood-like compound found in all living things that can reproduce the taste, color and aroma of meat. Other ingredients include herbal products such as soy, potato protein and coconut oil. Companies producing include Beyond Meat, New Wave Foods and even Nestle.
Burger King's goal is to offerby the end of the year.
The partnership between the two companies makes sense, said Pat Brown, CEO of Impossible Foods, in an interview. Burger King's vast reach, with more than 17,000 locations in more than 100 countries, should help him achieve his goal of "replacing animals in the food system by 2035".
"Wherever meat products are sold worldwide, we want better products," said Brown. "A not insignificant part of the meat sales are in fast food restaurants."
Impossible Foods originally focused on burgers as they are one of the most popular meat products. According to Brown, half of the beef sold in the US is ground beef. This does not mean that the company does not investigate other animal products.
"It was natural for us to start with minced meat, but that's not our actual focus in any way," Brown said. "We constantly strive to develop a much wider range of products."
proof for that? Today, 110 scientists work in the laboratories of the Impossible Food headquarters in Redwood City, California. According to Brown, this number will increase by about 50% in the next 12 to 18 months.
