Burger King's vegan Impossible Whopper heads to San Francisco

Burger King's goal is to offer the vegetable protein Impossible Whopper nationwide by the end of the year.

The partnership between the two companies makes sense, said Pat Brown, CEO of Impossible Foods, in an interview. Burger King's vast reach, with more than 17,000 locations in more than 100 countries, should help him achieve his goal of "replacing animals in the food system by 2035".

"Wherever meat products are sold worldwide, we want better products," said Brown. "A not insignificant part of the meat sales are in fast food restaurants."

Impossible burger is now sold in more than 9,000 restaurants and chains in the US, including Umami Burger, Red Robin and White Castle. And in May, the first meatless sausage product debuted at select Little Caesars locations. The company plans to sell its "ground beef" directly to consumers in grocery stores later this year.

Impossible Foods originally focused on burgers as they are one of the most popular meat products. According to Brown, half of the beef sold in the US is ground beef. This does not mean that the company does not investigate other animal products.

"It was natural for us to start with minced meat, but that's not our actual focus in any way," Brown said. "We constantly strive to develop a much wider range of products."
