California authorities said Friday that they accused the mother and her friend of a 10-year-old boy of murder and torture following the child's death earlier this month.
Heather Maxine Barron and Kareem Ernesto Leiva both face censure and torture, while Barron was also charged with child abuse and Leiva was charged with a charge of personal injury to a child causing death, a press release said Los Angeles District Attorney.
Authorities arrived at a residence in Lancaster, California, on June 20 after receiving an emergency call; There, they found 10-year-old Anthony Avalos unresponsive, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said earlier. The boy reportedly suffered injuries from a fall. He was taken to a local hospital where he died the next day.

Sheriff's Department labeled Avalos' death "suspicious"; Los Angeles County Child and Family Assistance Division said there were signs of "physical abuse, including signs of severe beatings and malnutrition."
The prosecution accused the couple on Friday of "torturing" the boy
Leiva was arrested on Wednesday while Barron was arrested on Friday, officials said. Investigators said the arrests took place after the authorities found evidence that the report on Avalos's steps was wrong.
"We feel he suffered a traumatic brain injury that led to a bleeding that led to the failure of his organs." Sherrons Lt. Derrick Alfred said

The district child-care commissioners received a dozen child molestation recommendations from 2013 to 2013 In 2016, officials said.
After Anthony died, child protection officers removed eight more children – aged between 11 months and 12 years – from the house. They are cared for by childcare workers, officials said.
