Cancer Survivor, 3, is Flower Girl at the Marrow Donor's Wedding

On July 29, 2016, Hayden Ryals rescued the life of two-year-old Skye Savren-McCormick with a bone marrow transplant. Now, two years later, Ryals and Skye teamed up for another special day: Ryal's wedding.

On June 9, little Skye served as a flower girl, while Ryal, 26, married Adrian Ryal in Hartford, Alabama. Just two days before the ceremony, Talia Savren-McCormick and her husband Todd set out on their long journey from their home in Ventura, California, to Alabama, where, as Savren-McCormick says, Skye enjoyed every moment.

"It was so cute and she was really excited to do it, I put her down on the floor and she took a step and then took a huge handful of flowers and threw them on the floor," says Savren McCormick People of now 3-year-old Skye. We were so grateful to Hayden that she saved the life of Skye, she was really sweet. "

Im In March 2016, doctors diagnosed Skye with lymphoma and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia – a rare cancer, of which only one is affected in one million children. Months later in July, she was matched with Ryals for the first bone marrow transplant. And Savren-McCormick says the families have stayed in touch ever since.

"When Skye turned 3 in March 3, Hayden sent her a birthday present, and there was a wedding invitation in the birthday card," the mother recalls. "The card says," In a perfect world you can come out and I would love Skye to be my flower girl. "We thought it was really cute, it was very special."

Savren-McCormick and Todd were initially skeptical about bringing Skye so far with her illness. But when the doctors gave the okay, both Skye and Ryals were upset.

"She had never been on a plane … she loved it – Skye looked at the clothes and Skye finally liked the one she wore best – she gets her own clothes every day, she's very headstrong what she is

Photos of the event showed that Skye fulfilled her duties as a flower girl and posed for photos with the bridal shower. The little girl wore a cream-colored dress with a blue ribbon around her waist.

"It was very humbling and surreal, everyone knew who she was because the city was so small," says Savren-McCormick PEOPLE of her daughter. "It was wonderful, I never thought we would be here, I was so proud of [Skye] how much she went through and how far she came in. The fact that we could do that was just amazing." "These words were like a hydrogen bomb we just dropped in our laps, with the smiling face of your own child," she told PEOPLE earlier. "As parents, we decided we had to keep fighting and Skye would tell us when or if she was done."

Skye needed blood and platelet transfusions – often daily – and underwent three bone marrow transplants, operations Remove her oversized spleen and several rounds of chemotherapy for the cancers, hospital officials say. She had received 77 units of blood and platelets during a 10-month stay at the UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital.

Now, Savren-McCormick says Skye is doing well and looking forward to all the memories she and Ryal are going to share.

"I always say they love each other, they're just in love, I could feel the love between them, Hayden was holding Skye and Skye was sitting in her lap almost all the time, they were together in their own little world. They have a special bond, "she says.

"It's a really sweet connection. [Skye] likes to look at pictures from [the wedding] and always tells people that she's the flower girl, she's very proud, I do not know if I'm ever from a receiver I found this very special, I can not wait for Skye to grow up and continue to have that relationship with Hayden.
