Cape Cod hit by rare tornadoes

There were reports of fallen trees and power lines but no known injuries, said Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency spokesman Christopher Besse.

More than 50,000 customers were out of electricity from 18:00 clock. ET, said energy company Eversource.

Of the 1,253 tornadoes that the United States has on average each year, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Massachusetts sees only one. Only Alaska and Rhode Island show no damage on average.
CNN subsidiary WHDH's video has been extensively damaged at the Cape Sands Inn in West Yarmouth. Megan McGuire, who told the affiliate that she and her mother were sheltering in the inn between beds, said she'd never seen anything like this in the 24 years she spent vacationing on Cape Cod.

The tornado landed in Harwich and South Yarmouth, said the State Agency for Civil Protection, citing the National Weather Service. Harwich has declared the local emergency.

The most extensive damage was reported at the Cape Sands Inn, the agency said.

A survey team of National Weather Service will meet with representatives of emergency management at the Cape to assess the damage, reported the service on Twitter.

Lt. Governor Karyn Polito told reporters that the crews conduct ratings.

"It's a miracle that there were no significant personal injuries," she said.
