Cardinals firing Mike McCoy, the name of Byron Leftwich OC after a humiliating Week 7 effort against Broncos

The Arizona Cardinals made the most obvious and likely necessary decision on Friday morning to get rid of offensive coordinator Mike McCoy after seven games of total disability.

The news comes in the wake of a 45-10 killing of the Cardinals by the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. Quarterback coach Byron Leftwich was named the new offensive coordinator in McCoy's absence.

It got so ugly that the Cardinals social media account refused to send out the end result, instead launching a GIF with happy puppies. Literally the first 50 answers are people who demand that McCoy be fired.

More about the NFL

And it's hard to blame these fans: McCoy's offensive was one of the worst in football in six weeks (seven for the Cardinals).

The Cardinals ranked second to last in Offensive DVOA at Football Outsiders ̵

1; only the Bills save them from being in the basement. Arizona is last in the NFL in yards per game (220.7), penultimate in yards per game (4.2) and penultimate in points (13.1).

David Johnson, who was once considered perhaps the best footballer, was completely castrated. Essentially, the Cardinals offensive was to keep Johnson in the middle of the line of attack, hoping he would break a tackle no matter how many defenders were in the box.

Arizona's opening match was straight into a group of Denver defenders looking for a run in the middle. They made it:

On Thursday, 21-3, McCoy went ahead with this plan, completely unconcerned that Denver piled the box.

Next Gen Stats from NFL.com show that this season was a constant topic Johnson just hit the middle of the line, even though the line is not good and although he is an excellent guy in the room.

Of course, it's not helpful to see rookie quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosen had a nightmare game on Thursday, throwing a pair of sixes and fumbling what felt like 12 times (it was only three). Miller was in his kitchen all day, and Rosen was repeatedly asked under fire to throw heavy casts across the field into narrow windows.

Good training should open the receivers and give a good look to young quarterbacks. McCoy did not do anything about it. Rosen finished the game with a rating of 44.2 passers-by. Woof.

This is the second year in a row that McCoy was fired in the middle of the season.

Leftwich is a type seen as an ascending star, a remnant of the former regime under Bruce Arians. Leftwich praised throughout the show long before McCoy was fired.

After the game, coach Steve Wilks said it was "premature" to talk about coaching changes.

"It's too early to talk about change now," Wilks said. As I said earlier, we need to find ways to steer it in the right direction. Obviously, he meant that evening because McCoy was the first to be released on Friday, it always stinks to see someone lose his job, but that's a necessary thing for the Cardinals moving forward, this was not the answer to the crime, you have to see what Rosen has, you have to see that Johnson is being used properly and you need to see if Leftwich can be a capable offensive coordinator.
