Carnegie Mellon reinvents the wheel with shape-shifting technology

An impressive new technology has emerged that can turn a bike into an all-terrain racetrack in just two seconds.

The invention is being developed for the US military in order to make it easier for their vehicles to handle different driving surfaces.

Developed by the National Robotics Engineering Center of Carnegie Mellon University, this device would mean that vehicles can switch from hard to soft terrain without having to slow down.

Called the "Reconfigurable Track" (RWT)

The rider is able to turn the rotating wheels into a triangular shape, creating tracks where the center stays still and the rubber rotates

The ability to quickly change the type of wheels a vehicle uses could prove to be extremely important for military vehicles that need a quick escape route.

And if technology ever makes it into mass production, it could completely change off-road driving.

4×4 vehicle drivers could venture their adventures to new heights and new terrains with the need to manually upgrade to tracks.
