Casino lights and sounds promote risky decisions

The flashing lights and exciting jingles in casinos can boost risky decisions and potentially encourage problem gambling, a new study from the University of British Columbia suggests.

The findings released today in JNeurosci, the journal of the Society for Neuroscience, suggest that sensory features in casinos can directly influence a player's decisions and encourage riskier decisions – and raise new concerns about those traits promote problematic gambling.
"We found that the decisions of an individual were less determined by the odds of winning if the casino-like audiovisual features were present in our laboratory gambling," said UBC postdoctoral fellow and principal author of the study, Mariya Cherkasova. "Overall, people took more risks playing the casino-like games, regardless of the odds."

"With the help of eye-tracker technology, we found that the odds of winning a particular piece of gambling were less well respected than money and casino jingles accompanied the profits," said the lead author of the study, Catharine Winstanley, a professor at the UBC Department of Psychology and a scientist at the Djavad Mowagaghian Center for Brain Health. "We also found that the participants had greater pupil dilation, suggesting that individuals were more aroused or tempted when the results were combined with sensory signals."
Lacking Sensory Stimuli, Participants Made a Restrained Decision (19459004) These findings provide insight into why it may be difficult for people with a propensity to gambling addiction to resist the lure of the casino.
"Together, these results provide new insights into the role of audiovisual signals in promoting risky choice, and may partially explain why some people insist on gambling despite unfavorable odds of winning," said Cherkasova.
"These findings constitute an important piece of the puzzle in terms of our understanding, such as gambling addiction and persist," added Winstanley. "While sound and light stimuli may seem harmless, we now understand that these clues can affect attention and promote risky decisions."
