Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday that they had received 127 cases of a polio-like disease called acute flaccid myelitis or AFM] So far, 62 cases have been confirmed, the CDC said. That's what makes 201
It is still not clear what causes the condition that can arise after a viral infection. "We were unable to find the cause of the majority of AFM cases," Messonnier said. "We have detected enterovirus in several of these individual cases."
None of the samples tested positive for polio virus. "AFM can be caused by other viruses such as enterovirus and West Nile virus as well as environmental toxins and autoimmune disease," Messonnier said.
NBC News had conducted its unofficial survey of state health officials and found 87 confirmed or suspicious cases in 26 states.
AFM affects the nervous system, especially gray matter in the spinal cord, the CDC says. Depending on which part of the spine is damaged, various muscles can become weak or paralyzed.
This can cause a range of symptoms, from difficulty raising an arm to severe weakening of the muscles that help with breathing. This may require the use of a ventilator to help the patient breathe.
Infection with many different viruses can cause neurological complications. AFM could be one of them.
Some children with AFM recover completely, but others have been disabled for years.
There is no specific treatment for AFM, says the CDC. Once a virus has attacked the nervous system, there is no known medical intervention that could reverse the effects. Rehabilitation therapy can help patients regain their function.
Since 2014, doctors are trying to find out if there is a way to prevent or treat the damage that leads to AFM. They found no clear evidence that corticosteroids, the use of intravenous immunoglobulin or IVIG, a type of blood filtration called plasmapheresis, have helped to use an immune enhancer called interferon, antiviral drugs or other medical treatments.
