Charlotte's wife killed in crash in Ohio

CLEVELAND, OHIO ̵

1; A woman died in a traffic accident when her boyfriend's car drove out on the highway. Petara Cordero, 26, of Charlotte, was the friend of Cleveland Brown's defender Chris Smith of Salisbury.

The team said Cordero had died when she was hit by an oncoming car on I-90 West around 2 am Wednesday. Cordero was a passenger in Smith's Lamborghini, who had a tire malfunction before the accident that caused him to hit the middle wall.

Cordero got out of the vehicle and stood on the shoulder of the road when a car driven by a 47-year-old woman hit the passenger side of Smith's car.

According to a Brown Police report from Cleveland, Cordero was taken to Fairview Hospital and pronounced dead.

Smith and Cordero recently celebrated the birth of a daughter, Haven Harris Smith.

Friends said Cordero was a ray of light.

"She only had positive feelings. She was very lovely, very nice, "said LaWan Adams.

Codero's first job was at LaWan's Soul Food on South Tryon Street.

" I saw her when she was six months pregnant "Adams said," She came through to show me her stomach, and she was just so excited to have a baby and in such a good place. "No charges were made and no toxicology reports are yet to come.

"I mean, everybody, even today, who got through, talked about it and the staff of the past just made us all heartbroken," Adams said.

Smith was not affected or injured, police said. [19659006] [ALSO READ: Early prediction: Cleveland Browns fan gets Super Bowl LIV champions tattoo]

Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam have given their condolences to Smith, who signed on as a free agent for the team last year, playing one season in Cincinnati and three in Jacksonville .

"Words can not describe the grief we feel for Chris after losing his girlfriend Petara," said the Haslams.

"Our entire organization mourns Chris, his family and the Cordero family. We will do our utmost to provide our support, comfort and resources during this most difficult time.

Cleveland's players were briefed on the accident during a meeting, and coach Freddie Kitchens visited Smith at his home. Smith had Smith's home apologized last month from the team's display against Indianapolis for the baby's arrival.

Smith played in the season-opening defeat to Tennessee on Sunday. The Browns play on Monday night at the New York Jets.
