Check: Is Girl Scout Scouting Money for Planned Parenthood?

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane district Republican Party has recently asked a question on their site: "Do you know where the Girl Scouts spend their biscuit?"

The question was followed by several links pointing out that Boy Scouts have partnered with Planned Parenthood, and the nonprofits are benefiting from some revenue from cookies.

To test this, we talked to scouts from Washington and northern Idaho, CEO Brian Newberry and Paul Dillon with Planned Parenthood from Greater Washington and North Idaho.

A link posted by the Republican Party in the state of Spokane claims that a girl's troupe holds an average of 1

0 to 20 percent of the money. On average, 65 to 75 percent of the money collected by all local troops goes to the local council. The US Boy Scouts will also collect a license fee for each box.

CEO Brian Newberry said, "The scout cookie revenue will stay with the girls."

He points to the collapse of the organization "How the cookie crumbles."

Just over 50 percent of scout girls' earnings remain local. The council uses this fund for local programs, events and training.

Nearly 12 percent of the fund goes to its troop-to-troops program, which benefits local troops.

The Girl Scout leaders stated that 6.8 percent is awarded for rewards such as travel and other programs for individual Girl Scouts.

Approximately 25 percent is spent on biscuit production and around 4 percent is voluntary training and transport of biscuits.

But does any of the money end up in the hands of Planned Parenthood?

"I stand up categorically and say that our organization has no partnership with planned parenting," Newberry said.

KREM also asked the local planned parenting office.

Paul Dillon, vice president of public affairs, said the non-profit organization has no funding from Girls Scouts.

So we can verify that the money raised by scout cookie sales remains local and no money goes to the planned parenting.
