To create an ideal donor monkey, the researchers proposed BMAL1, a central circadian regulatory transcription factor, through gene editing at the embryo stage.

They selected one of the most genetically-modified monkeys with the most severe disease phenotypes as a donor. The donor's fibroblasts were then used to clone five monkeys by somatic nuclear transfer, the same method used to produce Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, the first cloned monkeys born in China in late 2017.
