The United States said Tuesday its tariff threat of $ 50bn imports from China and would use it unless, Beijing dealt with the theft of American intellectual property.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce reacted harshly, saying that it was surprising and saw it as a consensus that both sides recently reached. The state-run news agency Xinhua said China hopes that the United States is not impulsive but willing to fight to protect its own interests.
"China's attitude is as usual: we do not want to fight, but we are not afraid to fight," said in the commentary by Xinhua reporter Yu Jiaxin. "China will continue to hold pragmatic consultations with the United States delegation and hope that the United States will act in accordance with the spirit of the joint statement," it said.
The Chinese tabloid Global Times said the United States suffered from a "deception" and warned that "trade refusal could make Washington dance with itself."
