. 1 Finally a surprise.
A college football season that gave us almost none ended with an unexpected blow to the level of Alabama-Miami (1992) or the state of Florida / Ohio (2006). I have to say, I do not appreciate it.
I told everyone who was listening in the last week that Bama was supposed to be technically favored, but I was confused by the unanimity – it seemed everyone was plucking the tide. The numbers also saw this as an ejection, so this was the perfect situation where I told you if Clemson would win by a narrow margin. Clemson did not narrowly win.
. 2 Here's what it was all about:
Actually, I know it came down to more than one thing. Bounces, one-handed catches … many things lead to a profit of this magnitude. When Alabama and Clemson play, Clemson does not even shiver.
So what this game was about: Clemson knows that Alabama can beat it.
Dabo Swinney's tiger is not even a bit scared. There is no doubt, deep inside – they defeated Bama two years ago, and they knew for sure that they could do it again. They did not wait for the breaks to bridge the tides. They made breaks for themselves, almost from the first kick-off.
- Instead of over-respecting the arm of Tua Tagovailoa, the second student A.J. Terrell kicked his third pass of the night and took him down for a touchdown.
- Rather than letting Tagovailoa slip over time, they repeatedly raided him in the pass rush, forcing him to throw litters he had. I had to rush all year round.
- And, rather than respecting the Alabama defense that governed college football for a decade, Trevor Lawrence topped the top.
About a month ago in Atlanta it was Georgia The attempt of a seemingly misguided special team faked recapturing a property in a slipping game. On Monday in Santa Clara it was Bama who attempted a wrong field goal to bring the kicker as lead blocker on the first possession of the third quarter.
It had no chance to work, even if defensive duel Nyles Pinckney had not dropped his blocker to save quarterback Mac Jones for a loss of two. Each of about six other defenders would stop Jones before taking the required six yards.
. 3 This was a strange fucking game.
We define each game as victory or defeat, depending on whether it was successful or not, so if Team A's offense on first descent gains 50 percent of its required run, 70 percent in the second, or 100 percent on the third Space. This is a win for Team A, and if not, it's a win for Team B.
- First-down victories (attack and defense): Alabama 42, Clemson 18
- Second-loss wins: Alabama 22, Clemson 20
- Third defeat wins: Clemson 19, Alabama 9
- Fourth defeat wins: Alabama 3, Clemson 3
This game was staggering on third ground and in a dramatic way. Clemson had more bigger meters ahead to reach the third descent – 7.7 on Bama 4.5 – but went 10 to 15 for Bama 4 to 13. Among these 10 transitions were passes from 26, 37, 62 and 74 meters. Bama won the other defeats with a dramatic lead (67-41) and was destroyed. Clemson's timing was second to none.
. 4 Gosh, Trevor Lawrence.
The golden-robed college quarterback had shown little evidence of being a true freshman throughout the season, but it was good to believe that certainly he at least flinched the damn national game at least a couple of times ,
No. While Tagovailoa achieved a completion rate of 65 percent, 7.8 yards per run (including sacks) and a rating of 145.2 passengers, he was one of only three QBs to reach a top score of 140 Tiger passengers that year – Lawrence was so much better: 63 percent graduation rate, 10.8 meters per pass attempt (with zero sacks), no selection and rating of 184.5
Although Tagovailoa also won the national title as a freshman, the role plays The Bama QB was pressure-free. He was saved last year in the second half against Georgia as an all-rounder. If he brought Bama back, he would be immortal. If he did not, it was Jalen Hurts's fault. Do not worry.
Lawrence faced the pressure of a starter. He did not even flinch.
. 5 The recipients of Lawrence have helped. I mean, my goodness:
Alabama's defense has caused a seemingly infinite number of Nick Saban's victories by blowing your line up, getting your quarterback to make accurate throwing dice in the field, and getting your recipients to These throws to catch against some of the best cornerbacks in college football.
In the rare situation in which the Crimson loses Tide, the quarterback and receiver usually requires a superhuman effort. Well, Clemson's receptionist Tee Higgins, Amari Rodgers and Justyn Ross got 11 of 17 balls for 264 yards and two touchdowns. If that's not superhuman, it's damn near.
. 6 Ross is a true freshman. Lawrence is a true freshman. None of this is fair to the rest of college football.
About thirteen months ago, Ross had finished his final season at Phenix City (Ala.) Central High.
Now he is completing a college football playoff appearance that includes two games, 18 goals, 12 catches, 301 yards and three outcomes.
7. So, guess who will be the two best teams in the preseason survey next year? At least Alabama brings an angry Tagovailoa, as well as Najee Harris and possibly the best returning corps coming back in this sport (if not) Clemson's, who eventually loses former Bama bat Hunter Renfrow). Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III and DeVonta Smith are all real graduates, Jaylen Waddle is a true freshman.
The defense of Bama could lose some stars as usual, but linebacker Dylan Moses is a true second grader, corner Patrick Surtain II is a true freshman, safety is Xavier McKinney a sophomore, etc. Tuscaloosa will be no talent for 2019 and potential.
Probably, who in Bama will be either number 1 or number 2: the team that has just won the Tide for the second time in three years. Lawrence, Higgins and Ross are supported by Travis Etienne.
Clemson's defensive front will suffer considerable wear and tear (a number of potential runners-up will be replaced by experienced former Blue Shorts), but the secondary will not. Brent Venables is still the coordinator. It will be fine.
Georgia … Ohio State … maybe Oklahoma, if the QB situation is alright … maybe Michigan, if it did not end up by the things that Michigan always liked … there should be an interesting list that will work out the list of candidates for next year. However, this list begins with the teams that have split the last four titles and played in four consecutive college football playoffs.
Clemson and Alabama have played four years in a row.
Clemson's seniors beat the Alabama seniors in total 125-116

8. Seriously, Bama tried a wrong field goal with the kicker as lead blocker.
And if it did not work, it was Clemson who instantly challenged Lawrence and Ross for a 74-yard combination. The bat of college football has hit his game.
