Coffey's Career Night leads Gophers to a comeback win over Nebraska

Six games were a long time away from home – by far the longest distance the Gophers played in Richard Pitino's season as coach of the Williams Arena.

Being able to feed on an energetic crowd and a career High 32 points from Amir Coffey were enough to help the Gophers return from a 13-point deficit and win their first Big Ten basketball Win this season by defeating No. 24 Nebraska 85-78 in the barn on Wednesday in the barn.

The Gophers (7-2, 1-1 Big Ten), who is on Sunday night at No. 16 Ohio State 79-59 had lost to open the league game, recovered with an inspired game for senior guardsman Dupree McBrayer who lost his game to Mother Mother Monday for a fight against cancer .

"The team is having a hard time losing Dupree's mom," Coffey said. "That was the whole game in mind. We just wanted to be there for him today, and he told us, 'Let's get this W W.'. "

The Cornhuskers (7: 2, 1

: 1), in the second half with 38 Percent were scored 19 points at 13 Minnesota turnovers to stay in control until the swing in favor of the home team staggered sharply. Minnesota shot 57 percent in the second half and finished the game in a 29:11 run in the last 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

Coffey tried to single-handedly wear a heavy hearted team as players wore patches with the team's initials from Tayra McFarlane, McBrayer's mother. The 6-8 junior had a three-pointer for his 30th spot, ending a 9-0 run in the second half, giving Minnesota a 77-73 lead and a 2:25 lead.

A few minutes earlier, McBrayer scored three goals for support from Coffey, which ignited the crowd and reduced Nebraska's lead to 71:68. The native New Yorker and co-captain was fouled to play at 1:17, and the spectators gave him supportive applause as he walked to the bank.

After the game, McBrayer's eyes widened as he was hugged by his teammates. and even Nebraska coach Tim Miles. Pitino was proud of how McBrayer played through the pain of his tragic loss and put together five points and four assists in 34 minutes.

"I just wanted the ball to covet him," said a strangled word Pitino "just so he could feel fine for a minute."

Coffey shot 8:16 out of the field and 14:17 from the foul line, six assists and six rebounds. Jordan Murphy finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, which allowed him a 52-time double-double career in the school.

Coffey unleashed a 13-2 run in the first half, leaving Minnesota a 36-32 lead with just under five, but the momentum evaporated as Coffey left the game after his third foul.

The Cornhuskers, who led 44:39 at halftime, took over Glynn's lead early in the second half with 55:42 Watson Jr. after McBrayer received his third foul.

After Pitino called his team's lack of physical resilience against the state of Ohio, the Gophers responded to the challenge overnight as they played for more than just a Big Ten win.

"We did not hang our heads because we knew we were 13," Murphy said. "We just kept fighting, recovering, scraping and defending. That was one of the biggest things. "
