Martin is the only LGBT athlete currently playing MLS football.
Minnesota midfielder Collin Martin came out as a gay gay man in the hours leading up to the team's annual annual Pride Night on Friday,
Martin shared his announcement in a post on Twitter. He explained that he has been traveling with his family, friends and teammates for years, but was now confident that he would appear in public. With his post, Martin becomes the only active athlete in the MLS and all men's sports in the US
"Today, I'm proud that my entire team and the management of Minnesota United know I'm gay," Martin said in the Post. "I've just received kindness and acceptance from everyone in Major League Soccer and that made the decision to appear in public a lot easier."

Just one more player came out while he was actively playing in the MLS – Robbie Rogers, a defender who came out in 2013, won the MLS Cup with the Galaxy in 2014 and retired in 2017. While most MLS teams have hosted a Pride Night as the main event each year, the league still faces homophobic problems with fans and players. Just a month ago, the galaxy was forced to make a statement warning fans against homophobic slurs during the Pride Night.
Martin's announcement, however, was supported by his teammates and the Minnesota Sports Community.
The Wild will wear rainbow-printed jerseys to celebrate the Pride Night.
