Former FBI director James Comey arrives at a Barnes & Noble in New York on April 1
In a conversation about his book " A Higher Loyalty" via NBC News "Meet the Press," Comey said that the report, released by the Republican House on Friday, was "Understanding What the facts were not presented before he left the FBI. Comey was released by President Trump in May.
"The most important piece of work is what the special adviser is doing now," Comey told anchor Chuck Todd. "This [the House committee report] appears to me as a political document."
Comey said he does not believe that the House Intelligence Committee is fulfilling a useful purpose in investigating Russian influence.
Partisanship "destroyed the committee," he said. "And it damaged relations with the FISA [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] court, the intelligence services, it's just a wreck."
Trump praised the report and said that "there is no evidence that the Trump campaign is collapsing with Russia , coordinated or conspired ". Democrats from the House Intelligence Committee have published a refutation of the report, accusing their Republican counterparts of ending their work prematurely with "a systematic attempt to water down and divert attention from the president."
The edited version of the committee's final report accuses the intelligence community of "making significant mistakes in the failure of intelligence agencies." She reports on contacts between Trump campaign officials, Russians and Russian mediators, but concludes that the investigators have "found no evidence that the Trump campaign collapsed, coordinated or conspired with the Russian government."
The report also accused the FBI of the fact that The Office responded to Russian interference in the 2016 elections. The Senate Intelligence Committee conducts its own investigation.
Trump and Comey continue to insult themselves publicly. At a performance on Thursday at "Fox and Friends" Trump called him "leaking, lying come". In a tweet on Friday called Trump Comey either very sick or very stupid. At a Michigan election campaign Saturday night, Trump referred to Comey and "how he lies."
"I did you a great favor when I fired this guy," Trump told his supporters at the rally.
In response to a question from Todd, whether Trump could be a credible witness in the Russian special investigator's investigation Comey said, "I have serious doubts about his credibility."
"The President of the United States?" Todd asked.
"Yes," replied Comey.
"Whether he was under oath or not?" Todd asked.
"Right," said Comey.
