A measles outbreak is spreading in a Washington district known for not vaccinating its children, and health officials have declared a public health emergency.

Health officials announced four new confirmed cases of measles in Oakland County late Thursday that were believed to be related to a sick traveler visiting the area earlier this month.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Oakland County Health Division are pushing people to vaccinate. The agencies also released an expanded list of places where people could have been exposed to the highly contagious disease, including shops, medical facilities and even the Oakland County Circuit Court.

In addition to the five confirmed cases, three further suspected cases are being investigated.

"It's definitely worrying, especially that there are so many already in the year," said Angela Minicuci, spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Free Press.

The Health Division will host a special measles vaccine clinic from 10:00 to 14:00. Saturday at the South Oakland Health Center, 27725 Greenfield Road in Southfield. The vaccine is also available at other times through this office and the health department's office in Pontiac, several healthcare providers and many pharmacies.

Measles spread through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A few days after the onset of symptoms, tiny white patches appear in the mouth, followed by a patchy red body rash.

The disease is spreading nationally. From January 1 to March 14, 268 cases were confirmed in 15 states, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Washington state, officials in a district known to have many residents opting not to vaccinate their children have declared a public health emergency.

Leigh-Anne Stafford, health officer for Oakland County, urged people to take in. I do not know if they have been vaccinated or if they have had measles in the past to get vaccinated.

"If you experience symptoms, you should not visit your doctor or your emergency room unless you call ahead so they can take precautions to avoid contact with other people," she said.
