The controversial Fresno State Professor Randa Jarrar has said goodbye to a planned public appearance the day after she hilariously celebrated the death of former First Lady Barbara Bush on social media.
Jarrar headlined the LitHop on Saturday, 201
LitHop was founded in 2016 by Fresno poet Lee Herrick. In the first two years of the one-day literary festival, the well-known Fresno authors Juan Felipe Herrera and Gary Soto were present.
Jarrar has received several threats online after she had launched on Twitter on the Bush family Bush's death on Tuesday
It is unclear whether the online threats have taken Jarrar's decision to withdraw from the event.
A Fresno-Publicized Statement City College says Campus and LitHop 2018 organizers support Jarrar's decision to withdraw, citing security concerns.
"The safety of everyone, including Jarrar and all members of the LitHop and Fresno City College community, is our primary concern."
The statement concludes the removal of the language from both Fresno City College and LitHop of Jarrar and their comments and express their condolences to the Bush family, "while we mourn the rest of our country for the loss of our former First Lady." 19659002] "While we respect the right to freedom of expression, even in an offensive language, Jarrars statements are their own and do not reflect the values of LitHop or Fresno City College," the press release said. "We recognize the seriousness of their statements and take the concerns expressed throughout the community very seriously."
Jarrar is, according to her biography on the website of Fresno State, an award-winning novelist, short story writer, essayist and translator.
She grew up in Kuwait and Egypt and moved to the US after the Gulf War. She identified herself in social media as an Arab-American and a Muslim-American woman
Jarrar received the 2014 Lannan Residency Program Fellowship Award for outstanding achievements in poetry, essays and scholarly articles, as well as social justice activism.
