Cox's new offer has raised concerns that the ISP violates the principles of net neutrality. But the service would not have violated the rules of net neutrality, even if they had not been revoked because Cox merely resells a third-party service and makes no changes to its broadband network.
Called "Cox Elite Gamer". The service is a Cox branded version of Wtfast, which alternatively can be purchased directly from Wtfast and used with other ISPs. Cox says the service "redirects your gaming activity over a dedicated gaming network to provide a shortened latency path between your computer and the game servers of selected online games."
The limitations of the service, however, show why there is no net neutrality problem. It only works on Windows computers and only if you install an application that connects to the special routing service. Therefore, online gamers who prefer consoles instead of PCs have no reason to buy them. "The service does not work with game consoles or Macintosh operating systems," says Cox.
If Cox implemented network-level prioritization, it would not be limited to Windows.
"This service does not increase the speed of traffic or prioritize game traffic from other traffic in our network," a Cox spokesman told Ars. Wtfast offers mixed results
The biggest difference between direct buying from Cox or Wtfast seems to be price. Cox's price of $ 14.99 a month includes simultaneous access for two PC users. However, it does seem to require a two-year agreement and the price rises to $ 20 per month after the action price expires. Cox sells additional licenses for $ 4.99 per month (up to five concurrent game sessions.)
Wtfast direct prices start at $ 14.99 for use on a single computer. However, this is possible from month to month without long-term commitment. One license for two computers costs $ 28.48 per month. Is this worth it? IGN's Matt Elliott tested Wtfast in April 2017 and tested several games and connections to servers in different regions. IGN found that Wtfast improved Overwatch latency when connecting to a game server in the Americas region from 301 ms to 43 ms, but in most other cases Wtfast had little or no weakening effects. "Without Wtfast, my ping on the Asia server of by Overwatch was 249 ms and it dropped to just 202 ms when I used WTFast and manually selected the" East Asia (Choose Best) "option, Elliott wrote.
