The 37-year-old woman pushed her son around 19:00 in a stroller. When someone alerted her that a coyote was following her, police in the northwestern town of Fairfield said in a press release.
When she turned around, the coyote lunged at the woman, police said. She fell to the ground and the stroller was overturned, the police said.
The coyote then bit the woman on the back of her leg and went after the child and bit his right leg, the police say.
When the people in the park ran for help, the mother managed to get up and lift the stroller, police said. Then the coyote lunged at her again before he flew into a wooded area.
Mother and child were taken to a hospital, and the police closed the park ̵
Shortly after 20:30, Sgt reported. Tracey spotted the coyote near a pool in a nearby backyard, police said.
Equipped with an M4 patrol gun, he got out of his patrol car.
The coyote "aggressively approached the sergeant," police said. He fired several shots "to protect himself," the police said, killing the coyote.
The animal is being tested for rabies by human society, police said. The police have attacked a nearby Doberman Pinscher the night before, saying that […]. that the inhabitants "saw and heard a large number of coyotes behind their houses".
Reports of coyotes in the region have increased significantly since 1980, the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Division said, although there is no official population estimate.
