Under the demands of the Catholic leaders for excommunication, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has defended a controversial state law abolishing the abortion rules.
The law allows abortions to be performed by non-physicians until the time of birth for many reasons. Cuomo, who announces his Catholic faith and used to be an altar, washed away the criticism of the law on Tuesday.

Cuomo pointed out that his father, Mario Cuomo, the late former mayor, received similar criticism for his support of abortion.
"Bishops are attacking Governor Cuomo," he said, laughing. "Let's bring this headline up from about 30 years ago."
