Dad wins the fight to increase parental leave for men at JPMorgan Chase: NPR

Derek Rotondo filed a class action lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, his employer, for offering women more paid parental leave than men. The bank changed its policy and announced an agreement on Thursday.

Two years ago, Derek Rotondo told his employer that he wanted to take 16 weeks of paid leave granted to the primary caregivers for his newborn son. He says he was told: "Men as biological fathers were probably not the primary caregiver." He was only entitled to two weeks' leave.

Rotondo, who had been investigating financial crimes for JPMorgan Chase for seven years, filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging gender discrimination at the big bank. Within days, JPMorgan Chase said it would work with Rotondo, granting him the extra vacation he wanted.

On Thursday, his case culminated in a class action lawsuit with JPMorgan Chase. The bank is paying $ 5 million to hundreds, possibly thousands, of men who have applied for and rejected primary school leave in the past seven years. It has also changed its parental leave policy to make it gender neutral.

Some women receive a medical vacation to recover from a birth that is separate from parental leave and often extends a woman's free time. Romer-Friedman says when it comes to parental leave, "the Supreme Court has made it very clear that parental leave for care needs to be granted on exactly the same terms." He says that these guidelines also help women who can benefit from their spouse's childcare.

Rotondo says that since submitting his application he has heard from many other dads who have similar issues with their employer policies. He's glad he brought the case, he says, "so we can get rid of some of those stereotypes where the woman's job is to get babies and cooks, and the guy gets back to work and pays the bills That does not work, it's not the century we live in. "
