Dad's grief after the little girl "flapped" and died a few minutes after giving birth



A dad was left devastated after his baby daughter died within a few minutes after birth of an infection affecting one in 1,750 newborns.

Brendan Maguire from Belfast, Northern Ireland, now demands that all parents receive a Private Medical Test for Group B Streptococcus (GBS), Belfast Live.

The 31-year-old said he felt like he was in a dream when his daughter Hollie "limped" in 2016 at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and died.

The mortgage consultant said, "Everyone thought that Hollie was perfectly well, but shortly after she was born she became sluggish and lethargic, had trouble breathing and died.

"It was inexplicable. I went to a place I had never been before, I just could not believe it – I felt like I was dreaming. "Up to 25 percent of women are in the vagina – with no symptoms or side effects."

The bacterium is present in about 20 percent of pregnant women, causing no harm but may unknowingly pass to their baby during delivery [19659003] The majority of infants are unaffected, but one in 1,750 newborns develop GBS infection.

One in 19 of these infants dies and one in 14 survivors will be disabled in the long term.

Brendan said that he and his wife Susan, 36, had a "textbook" pregnancy but was not informed about the dangers of GBS.

He added, "We were not made aware that my wife was wearing her, even though 40 percent of people can wear it at the same time.

"There is a risk matrix, and if you do not tick the box, they will not test you for it."



Hollie's mother was diagnosed with GBS after her daughter died.
