If UFC President Dana White really wanted to do something cool for his fans, he would find a way to put the light Justin Gaethje on each of his cards.
Gaethje quickly earned the title as the UFC's most exciting fighter, despite fierce competition, with another stunning performance. While most Gaethje bouts are toe-to-toe slugfest, his fight Saturday with James Vick was not.
Gaethje did what he said he would and he cut the distance and got in front of the bigger Vick. When he got there, he arrived with sinister intentions and ended the fight violently. He fired a left hook, which touched Vick's chin, but then connected with a thunderous right hand, which Vick cools out at 1:27 of the first.
It was the first of his four UFC bouts that Gaethje did not deserve the "fight of the night" bonus, but that was mainly because he finished it before a great fight could break out. But he earned a $ 50,000 nightly performance bonus and consolidated his reputation as an MMA highlight movie.
"I'm a fighter and I'm here to become a legend and make everything happen." Gaethje said at the Fox Sports 1 post-fight show. "So you become a legend, fight, I love it, I love it so much."
And those of us who see it love it too. He is a whirlwind of activity and attacks from the beginning. He has an unbelievably good chin to handle heavy hands, and he fights at such a hectic pace that the televised announcers quickly lose their breath.
Gaethje won his UFC debut last year with a typically wild and entertaining win over Michael Johnson before suffering back-to-back losses to Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier. They did not hurt his status very much – even though they hurt his pride – because they were such memorable battles and were among the best fights in the UFC. Even so, he was hungry for a win on Saturday, especially after Vick had talked a lot of garbage before the fight.
"I'm the least wrong person in this sport," said Gaethje. "I take everything personally, I took everything he had personally said."
He channeled his wrath the correct way and blew out Vick, who had gone with 13 to 1 and 10 points in the fight. However, he had no chance to do much on Saturday because he was hit by a blitzkrieg from Gaethje.
Vick was so far off that Gaetje shook hands when Vick came on stage while Vick tried
"God, I love this stuff," Gaethje said beaming.
