It was praised as a mood enhancer, and now the consumption of dark chocolate is recognized as a visual aid.
But before breaking the family block, US researchers warn that the improvement in visual clarity is minimal.
The consumption of dark chocolate, which is rich in cocoa flavanols – a potent antioxidant – is associated with a short-term improvement in blood circulation, mood and perception.
To investigate whether the positive effects on human vision have flowed, researchers at The University of the Incarnation Rosenberg School of Optometry at San Antonio conducted a randomized study, in which the influence of dark chocolate or milk chocolate on visual performance
The participants randomly received a 40 gram dark chocolate with 72 percent cocoa or (1
Among the 30 participants, nine men and 21 women were average age 26, contrast sensitivity in lower case was significantly higher after consuming dark chocolate compared to whole milk chocolate
"Contrast sensitivity and visual acuity were compared two hours after eating a dark slab to a whole milk chocolate much higher, but the duration of these effects and their influence in the real world expect further tests, "wrote the authors.
The researchers could not say how long the benefit would last or identify the biological mechanism for the outcome.
One possible explanation could be an increase in cerebral blood flow and oxygen to the eye, the researchers said.
The study was published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology.
