David Attenborough has joined Instagram. Four hours later, he had 1 million followers

The veteran broadcaster’s first post – a video warning about climate change – was released at 2 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, and a little over four hours later, its account hit 1 million followers, Guinness World Records said.
Attenborough stated that he was new to the social media platform but was debuting on Instagram to raise awareness of the climate emergency.

“As we all know, the world is in trouble,” he said on the IGTV video, which has been viewed more than 9 million times.

“But we know what to do about it,” he said.

The world has set a 2020 deadline to save nature, but not a single goal has been achieved, according to the UN report

Attenborough urged viewers to tune in over the next few weeks to learn more about the problems – and solutions – the world is facing to climate change.

“For the next few weeks I’ll be recording messages to explain what the problems are and how we can deal with them,” he said.

Attenborough’s Instagram account is operated with the help of colleagues Jonnie Hughes and Colin Butfield. The couple wrote a message about the 94-year-old’s first video.

“Social media is not David’s usual habitat,” they said.

“David Attenborough has traveled a lifetime, exploring the wild places on our planet and documenting the living world in all its diversity and wonder. He has also witnessed the damage it has caused. Saving our planet is now a communication challenge. We know what to do do is. We just need the will, “they added.

Attenborough’s rapid acquisition of Instagram followers beats previous record holder Jennifer Aniston, who gained 1 million followers in five hours and 16 minutes after joining Facebook’s own platform in 2019, Guinness World Records said.
