(KABUL, Afghanistan) – An Afghan official says the death toll in an attack on Christmas Eve in the capital has risen to 43. Health Ministry spokesman Wahid Majro says police and emergency workers have still searched for corpses on public welfare buildings early Tuesday.
A suicide bomber and armed men armed with assault rifles and explosives attacked the building in Kabul on Monday, triggering an eight-hour siege. No one claimed the attack, but both the Taliban and a subsidiary of the Islamic State often target government officials and security forces.
One of the attackers died when he detonated his explosives-laden vehicle outside the building. Three other armed men were killed in the shootings. It was unclear whether the three were included in the death toll paid by the Ministry of Health.
