The United Launch Alliance put a new satellite into orbit on orbiting Cape Canaveral on Friday night with a fiery blast from Cape Canaveral, drones and battlefield commanders.

Friday night's launch was delayed by 90 minutes to give engineers time to investigate technical concerns on the first and second stages of the Delta 4 rocket. Once these issues were resolved, the launch team had to wait for officers to make sure that NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System is ready to direct the telemetry from the rocket to the ground controllers.

The mission marked the penultimate flight of the Delta-4 missile variant with a single core of the first tier – known as Delta-4 medium – as ULA retires its Launcher family to retire on the debut of the prepare new Vulcan booster, which will be cheaper than the previous Atlas and Delta fleet.

ULA was formed in 2006 by the merger of the Boeing Delta 4 and Lockheed Martins Atlas 5 rocket programs. The 50:50 joint venture put both missile lines into operation to ensure that the US military has two independent launch options for national security satellites.

On Friday, the rocket variant Delta 4-Medium + 5.4 launched with four solid rockets and a 5.1 meter (16.7 feet) upper stage and a payload coverage. It was the eighth and final flight of the Delta 4-Medium + 5.4 configuration, and all carried WGS satellites for the Luftwaffe.

Another Delta 4 medium missile is due to launch an Air GPS navigation satellite on July 25 from Cape Canaveral. This launcher will fly in the Delta 4-Medium + 4.2 configuration with two solid rockets and a 4 meter diameter upper stage and a payload fairing.

With the launch of Friday, the Delta 4 rocket has flown 39 times since November 2002, and 28 of these missions used a Delta 4 medium.

"It has a very successful history and is similar to the WGS satellite, it is a workhorse for the Luftwaffe," said Wentz Delta 4-Medium. "It's kind of bittersweet that we're here in the end, but we look forward to the future missions and the vehicles we will use."

Including the GPS launch in July, ULA has contracts in use for six Delta-4 flights until 2024. The five early 2020s scheduled Delta-4 heavy-starts will all be top-secret payloads for the National Reconnaissance Office Raise the US Spy Satellite Agency:

The 13,200 WGS 10 communications satellite (6,000 kilograms) – Friday night launched nine broadband satellites deployed since 2007 to form a global network that passes video, data and other information between battlefields to decision makers.

Congress raised $ 600 million in its defense budget for two new WGS satellites in 2018, overriding the military's plans to acquire more communications capacity from commercial satellites. The Air Force launched another round of WGS procurement with the unexpected money, and Boeing submitted a proposal in January. According to Becht, military officials have not decided to order one or two more WGS satellites. He said a final decision and contract signing is expected later this year.

Becht said the Air Force could follow a buy model often used by commercial satellite operators, where Boeing is responsible for building the new WGS spacecraft, which costs more. effective practices.
