A Richmond County MP was shot dead on August night in Augusta, authorities confirmed.
Deputies, drug investigator Cecil Ridley, was arrested at 12th Street and on Martin Luther King's Jr. Boulevard in Augusta, Sheriff's Office, Sgt. William McCarty confirmed to AJC.com.
The MP conducted proactive patrols to stem gun violence in the region, which began last week, McCarty said. At some point Ridley encountered a suspect and it came to a firefight. It is unclear what led to the shots.
The suspect was also shot and taken to the medical center of Augusta University, McCarty said. The state of the suspect is unknown.
The GBI confirmed on Twitter that it is responding to a shoot-out involving an official involved in the sheriff's office in Richmond County. No further information has been published.
Richmond's deputy is the seventh law enforcement officer in Georgia who dies in the queue according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, tracking deaths across the country.
According to the database, Ridley is the 108th officer to be killed on duty this year. He was 51 years old and lived in Augusta.
It is unclear how long Ridley worked in the sheriff's office, but in 2018 he received an award for five years of service investigation that opened the GBI this year.
The 76th investigation was triggered by a shoot-out in Monroe on Monday night after a dispute in a hotel, AJC.com previously reported. A man was shot twice by the police after allegedly refusing officers' orders and speeding up a jeep
The Atlanta Journal's constitution also includes shootings of officials in which the GBI is not involved, and these figures sometimes diverge from the GBI's record.
