Chris Ilitch, CEO of Detroit Red Wings, and General Manager Ken Holland answer questions on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Little Caesars Arena.

The Detroit Red Wings have hired Dan Bylsma as assistant coach.

Bylsma, a native of Grand Haven, has plenty of experience behind a hockey bench: he coached the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2008 to 2014, led them to the 2009 Stanley Cup Championship in a seven-game series victory over the Wings, and became Head coach of the Buffalo Sabers of 2015-17

Detroit Red Wings "must do it right" in the draft crucial for the reconstruction

Most recently, he worked with Wings coach Jeff Blashill at the World 2018 championship.

Bylsma, 47, takes the place of John Torchetti, whose contract was not renewed after last season.

The native of Grand Haven attended Muskegon's Western Michigan Christian High School before being drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 1989. [19659011] Contact Helene St. James: Follow her on Twitter @helenestjames. Take a look at our Red Wings Xtra app on Apple and Android!
