CHICAGO – Sunday's game was another example of why the Detroit Red Wings are better off in the lottery.
Their trip to the United Center showed they lacked talent and lack of firepower to overcome a bad start. Their 5-2 defeat to the Chicago Blackhawks disappointed even more as the Wings played well as losses struck New Year's Eve.
Then came Sunday. The Blackhawks dictated the game in the first game period, scoring twice twice.
"It's bad if we're not ready from the beginning," said Christoffer Ehn. "It's really frustrating and disappointing that we really betrayed the first hour, we had a couple of games we came out with, flying at the start, but today was not good enough and they were all over us.
"It was a good sign that we could fight back and are still in the game, but it's really disappointing that we've lost." More: Dylan Larkin remains the brightest star of Detroit Red Wings in the United States Dark Season

Coach Jeff Blashill described the start as brutal.
"Not nearly good enough," Blashill said. "Halfway we played with more jam and a lot more than last month.
" The start was not mentally finished yet. We have given more raids during this time than We have not done it for a long time, that is not excusable. Not nearly enough. On the road we can not see teams 2-0.
At the height of their success a decade ago, the Wings could get away Ehn made it 2: 1 and Gustav Nyquist 3: 2. Less than a minute after Nyquist played 4:30 in the regular game, Patrick Kane scored the first 2007 Overall Win – Jonathan Bernier: USNDT player Jack Hughes, the 2019 drafting jack-high who plays next door in Plymouth, drew a comparison. Ks is a highly skilled, undersized American striker. The loss brings the Wings in the hunt for Hughes advantages and improves their chances in the lottery.
But it's one thing to lose in competition, just as the Wings have done since the beginning of the new year. They were mostly fast and physically, outperforming their opponents early in the match and gaining confidence, especially after winning three games earlier in the month. Sunday, the third loss in a row since this series, was a blemish.
"I know with certainty that we've been playing good hockey for 20 games, scoring a winning game in three games," Blashill said. "We had very good first periods. This was something I had not seen for some time and can not happen to our club.
