CLEARWATER, Fla – Spencer Turnbull showed his best at the beginning of his spring training.

With a Detroit Tiger Rotary Point launched into reach after Michael Fulmer lost the season with the upcoming elbow recovery operation, Turnbull threw five goalless innings against a strong Phillies team on Wednesday afternoon ,

His outing had plenty of movement and a feeble contact with Philadelphia's regular players, including freethinker Bryce Harper, and this move showed in seven failures.

Turnbull had a stroke more than the minimum, so three hits – all singles – and a walk were possible. He benefited from two double games behind him.

Thereafter, Turnbull admitted he was aware of the situation: with Fulmer, the Tigers must search for a fifth starter, who is probably himself or left-hander Daniel Norris.

When asked if he thought he was ready for the occasion, Turnbull said, "I think I'm ready."

The Tigers defeated the Phillies 3-1.

Other observations from Wednesday:

Turnbull should win a place

The Tigers had a wiggle room with five powerful starters, but now is Fulmer Turnbull should be her type. Simply put, he was one of the top three starters this spring and has little to prove at Triple-A Toledo. His next start should be early next week.

Say Hay

Josh Harrison had one day: Hen provided an early strike, hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the third inning, and later added an RBI single to the game. Harrison, who will be Tiger's second baseman and leadoff man, beats 387 this spring.

What a litter!

JaCoby Jones, one of the best midfield defenders due to his elite athleticism, showed a strong arm that briefly launched Jean Segura in the fourth inning on the third base. Jones also went for a walk and stole a base. He enters a kind of breakthrough year.

He said it

"I do not know what else to do," Turnbull said of the competition for the fifth star rotation point.

Two Cents

Good, solid game of the tigers. My guess is that Turnbull gets the final pivot and Daniel Norris opens the season with great relief, with the team still seeing him as a starter.
